Medical marijuana, and more specifically cannabidiol, or CBD, is used in the treatment of numerous medical conditions – and in many cases, it provides relief where traditional medications are found ineffective. While the scientific studies are still small in scale, there are certainly data and evidence to back up a lot of the anecdotal evidence that can be found on the internet.
According to both patient success stories, and scientific data, CBD may be useful in the following five conditions – as well as many others.
Chronic pain covers a wide range of conditions from all different forms of arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc.), fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and so many others that leave you with aches and pains that never seem to go away. In fact, nearly half of the reported CBD users stopped taking traditional medications to fight their chronic pain. Multiple studies have found CBD to be beneficial with both painkilling and anti-inflammatory effects.
DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
Depression and anxiety are both hard to live with on their own – and unfortunately, they more often than not come as a package deal. Those who suffer from depression get anxiety about how their depression is affecting their lives – and those with anxiety become depressed about the hold anxiety can have over them. Studies on animals have shown CBD to be able to provide faster relief to these symptoms than any pharmaceutical currently on the market.
Mostly affecting the older population, Parkinson’s Disease can make doing everyday tasks nearly impossible due to tremors and reduced reaction time among other symptoms. Surely, we’ve all seen the videos on YouTube that look like a miracle took place when a man vaporizes CBD and his tremors come to an end. In one study it was found that CBD could have a possible chance at improving the quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease – which should encourage larger scale studies in the future.
When you think of cannabis you likely don’t think of it as an anti-psychotic medicine – but unlike THC which does have psychoactive properties, CBD has the potential to counter those effects. Due to CBD’s ability to counteract THC, it has great potential in treating conditions like schizophrenia. In fact, in the UK, GW Pharmaceuticals, makers of Epidiolex, are conducting clinical trials of their medication on patients with schizophrenia.
Most notably, CBD is constantly talked about in the treatment of cancer – with some studies finding that introducing CBD could shrink cancerous tumors. While many of these studies are very preliminary, the results speak for themselves. For example, a recent study found that CBD alongside chemotherapy increased survival rates nearly three times in mice with pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most aggressive and untreatable types of cancer.
These are by far not the only conditions that can benefit from CBD – but they are some of the conditions where there has been the most research so far to back-up patient stories.
